The Cabaret Fringe Festival gave us a plethora of awesome shows this year. And ‘Club Gotham’ by The Justass League was certainly no exception.
Sitting in a room totally full of patrons and many dressed in super hero and super villain attire it was clear from the beginning we were in for a tantalizing & thrilling ride of burlesque cabaret served up as crime time from the Batman era.
They all were there, Poison Ivy, the Penguin, Two Face & Robin The ‘Girl’ Wonder. Desert Rose as the Riddler kicked off the night shimmying down the staircase and onto the stage and alluring us with her sexy strip tease that left the audience lining up to join the dark side of the baddies, no question.
Burlesque at it’s finest, the night was wonderfully mc’d and held together by the talented Hugo Fielke who played a manical Joker complete with a wicked laugh in the theme of the original Cesar Romero version. Together with his faithfully in love side kick Harley Quinn (played by Lyla Dash) they held the audience between acts.
The costumes were of a flawless detail and assisted in perfectly executed reveals. Ad there were lots of reveals – they’re not called The Justass League for nothing kids.
What was fresh and appealing is there were loads of live vocals by many of the performers, a stand-out was Diana Divine’s Cat Woman who sung beautifully ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Bestfriend’. Diana along with Jackson Preuss produced this visual feast that was colorful and well-timed with great numbers that kept the audience entertainment and enthralled with many cheers and involvement. It was a joyous kaleidoscope of dance, spectacle and skin.
Naturally Batman made an appearance, and it was totally appreciated by the crowd. Ignatius Blackthorne gave a twist to our beloved super- hero. Never have we seen such a fabulous and flamboyant glitter bearded Batman, George Clooney and Michael Keaton have nothing on him. What was touching was a show dedication to recently deceased original TV Batman Adam West, which drew an appreciative applause.
This was classic cabaret and all the brilliant cast gave 100%. Exciting and as intoxicating as one of Poison Ivy’s kisses… we can’t wait to see what further shows The Justass League have in-store for us.
